The prestigious award is for technological innovation of an OTC product and was presented to the BestaMed team within the Bulgarian Pharmaceutical Days 2021.
BestaMed’s newest drug product, Oklys®, has been named “Product of the Year” in the Nonprescription Drug Product Technology Innovation category for the 2021 dosage form. The award was presented to the BestaMed team on 25 June at the annual Bulgarian Pharmaceutical Days 2021 forum in Borovets.
A special jury named Oklys® as the winner of the category due to its impeccable nomination of a unique drug in the country, which thanks to the combination of ibuprofen L-arginine in granules for oral solution sachet helps for fast and long-lasting analgesia.
The innovative composition of Oklys® makes it the only painkiller of its kind in Bulgaria, which relieves pain immediately and guarantees a quick and lasting analgesic effect. Oklys® has proven effectiveness and affects pain in muscle and bone diseases and inflammation, headache, toothache, postoperative pain, primary dysmenorrhea, rheumatoid arthritis and juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, arthrosis and other acute or chronic rheumatic processes. Pains the soft tissues in sprains and strains, has a beneficial effect in pharyngitis, tonsillitis, ear infections.

Ibuprofen L-arginine (ibuprofen L-arginine)
In the search for a way to further accelerate the analgesic effect of ibuprofen at the end of the twentieth century, it was found that the combination of ibuprofen and L-arginine promotes a much faster absorption of the active substance.
Ibuprofen L – arginine:
t max = 20 minutes.
Ibuprofen L – arginine has 2 to 5 times faster resorption compared to products containing racemic ibuprofen, t max is 20 minutes after fasting administration. (KHP)
t max – the time for which the peak (highest) concentration in the blood is reached.
Faster absorption leads to faster pain relief with the same side effect profile. A 2017 study* in healthy volunteers measured changes in levels of PGE2 (the enzyme responsible for the onset of pain) relative to levels before taking different pharmaceutical forms of ibuprofen and found differences.
Although the different forms achieved similar levels of inhibition of this enzyme, the pharmaceutical form ibuprofen L-arginine significantly increased, relative to standard ibuprofen, the weighted mean inhibition of PGE2 (prostaglandin E2) in the eight-hour period following oral administration.
Ibuprofen (ibuprofen)
was patented in 1961 and first introduced to the UK market in 1969. Since 1983 it has had the status of an over-the-counter medicinal product.
The discoverer of the ibuprofen molecule, Stewart Adams, was also the first “patient” on whom its analgesic effect was tested. Adams used it as a hangover cure.
Ibuprofen is a fast-acting analgesic – t max 1 to 2 hours after oral administration.
L-Arginine
One of the most common amino acids in nature. It has very good water solubility, which is why it is used as a carrier molecule in pharmaceutics. Attached to L-arginine molecules acquire its water solubility, and the rate of their absorption increases significantly (significantly).
Arginine affects the physical capacity of the body, the synthesis of NO – the main “enemy” of atherosclerosis – is involved in the synthesis of growth hormone and a number of proteins.
/ It is the only ibuprofen L-arginine in Bulgaria.
